Towards two-component lipid bilayer membranes: snapping elastic curves

چکیده

Studying a one-dimensional analogue of the spontaneous curvature model for twocomponent lipid bilayer membranes we consider planar curves that are made of a material with two phases. Each phase induces a different preferred curvature, and these curvatures as well as phase boundaries may cause the curves to develop kinks. We introduce a family of models for smooth curves and phase fields that approximates the above situation in the sense of Γ-convergence of energies. The theoretical result is illustrated by some numerical examples.

How to determine local elastic properties of lipid bilayer membranes from atomic-force-microscope measurements: a theoretical analysis.

Measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM) offer a direct way to probe elastic properties of lipid bilayer membranes locally: provided the underlying stress-strain relation is known, material parameters such as surface tension or bending rigidity may be deduced. In a recent experiment a pore-spanning membrane was poked with an AFM tip, yielding a linear behavior of the force-indentation...

Shape fluctuations and elastic properties of two-component bilayer membranes

– The elastic properties of two-component bilayer membranes are studied using a coarse grain model for amphiphilic molecules. The two species of amphiphiles considered here differ only in their length. Molecular Dynamics simulations are performed in order to analyze the shape fluctuations of the two-component bilayer membranes and to determine their bending rigidity. Both the bending rigidity a...

Membranes: Shaping biological matter.

173 news & views t he space occupied by living organisms is determined by membranes. Each cell is delimited by a membrane, and additional membranes form the functional hierarchy of compartments packed within it. The intracellular compartments, for example vesicles and organelles, define the spatial organization of metabolic pathways, thus providing the topological framework for cellular life. R...

Physicochemical analysis of phosphatidylcholine-ceramide system in bilayer lipid membranes.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used for the study of two-component lipid membranes. Phosphatidylcholine and ceramide were to be investigated, since they play an important biochemical role in cell membranes. The research on biolipid interaction was focused on quantitative description of processes that take part in a bilayer. Assumed models of interaction between amphiphilic molecules...

Directional interactions and cooperativity between mechanosensitive membrane proteins.

While modern structural biology has provided us with a rich and diverse picture of membrane proteins, the biological function of membrane proteins is often influenced by the mechanical properties of the surrounding lipid bilayer. Here we explore the relation between the shape of membrane proteins and the cooperative function of membrane proteins induced by membrane-mediated elastic interactions...
